About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services

(as the patient),

I have to give credit to most of the team in sligo for there hard work and dedication to the DBT (Dialectical behavior therapy) service in sligo, It has really changed my life for the better I would not have thought in a million years that something like this would have a huge impact in my life and change it for the better. I do have a huge fault with the service, I think the follow up is awful...
I think that if they were as dedicated to their client and to follow up as they are to collecting research the outcomes of the service would be much better.

Dear DBT Graduate,

We are glad that you had such a positive experience of the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy intervention. It really helps us to hear that you made such progress.

You have identified a frustration with follow up. As you may be aware, clients of DBT receive 4 follow up appointments to be used within two months of completing the 12 months of DBT. We agree that this follow up is relatively short and it may be of benefit to offer more follow up. However, the therapists who provide DBT have a limit to the amount of time they have available. If we were to follow clients up for a long period of time, that would mean that we have less time to offer DBT to new people.

With regard to the research. We do the research at different points in people’s DBT journey to find out if DBT is working and what the best way of doing DBT is. At the moment, our research and other international research tells us that the best way to do DBT is to use our resources on preparing people for DBT and then 12 months of group and individual appointments. As part of listening to your feedback we will discuss as a team adding an assessment of client satisfaction as part of the research.

It is a difficult balance (a dialect!) but we really welcome your feedback and we will use it to help improve the service.

Finally, if anybody is having trouble with emotional well being we suggest linking in with their GP or the Multidisciplinary Adult Mental Health Team.

Thanks again – the DBT team.
