"Psychiatric Unit Portlaoise Hospital"

About: Midland Regional Hospital / Psychiatry

(as the patient),

I attended the psychiatric unit in Portlaoise Hospital in 2012 and was assessed. I was offered admission but declined as I felt it was not necessary. A few hours later my situation changed and my health deteriorated. I returned to the unit to be told that I would not be seen a second time. I told the doctor I would leave and end my life. He let me leave and did nothing to try to stop me. Less than an hour later I took a significant overdose to end my life. I ended up in the CCU department of the hospital. I went through a lengthy complaints process about a year later in which I was told my complaint would not be upheld because the doctor said he never refused to assess a second time. I'm not sure what was more traumatic, trying to end my life or the degrading joke of a complaints process that followed.
